Know the boundary
Home Repair Safety
General safety rules for deciding whether a home task is appropriate for DIY or belongs with a qualified professional.
Stop immediately for these conditions
- Gas odour, electrical arcing, smoke or overheated wiring.
- Sewage, contaminated floodwater or rapidly spreading water.
- Structural movement, falling material, unstable glass or unsafe access.
- Unknown asbestos, lead paint or other hazardous material disturbance.
- Work requiring a licence, permit or building approval.
Control the energy source
Shut off water or electrical supply only when you can identify and operate the correct control safely. Do not assume a switch, breaker or valve has isolated the system; qualified verification may be required.
Use the product instructions
Adhesives, coatings, sealants, anchors, filters and repair parts have material, temperature, ventilation, load and cure limits. The current manufacturer instructions take priority over a general web guide.
Protect other people
Keep children, pets and occupants away from tools, dust, chemicals, open walls and wet floors. Maintain emergency exits and never disable a fire-safety component to complete a cosmetic repair.
