How to back up PC game saves without trusting cloud sync alone
A copied game installation is usually not a save backup. Save data may live in Documents, AppData, ProgramData or a launcher profile.
Safe rule: keep one untouched local copy, one separate-device copy and—where available—a verified cloud copy.
Know the three layers
| Layer | What it contains | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Installed files | Executables and assets | Usually replaceable. |
| Save/profile data | Progress, settings and characters | May be irreplaceable. |
| Cloud sync | Synchronized copy | Can also sync deletion or corruption. |
Find the real location
- Check official support or launcher documentation.
- Look in Documents, Saved Games, AppData Local and Roaming.
- Save in-game and confirm which files changed.
- Close game and launcher before copying the whole folder.
- Label the backup with game version and profile.
Verify before reinstalling
Compare file count and size, keep the original untouched and test restoration only after documenting the current location.
Common save locations on Windows
Locations vary, but the useful search order is predictable: the game’s official support page, the launcher’s cloud-sync page, Documents, Saved Games, AppData Local, AppData LocalLow, AppData Roaming, ProgramData and the game’s installation or profile folder. Do not copy only the newest-looking file until you know whether the game uses several linked files.
| Location pattern | What may be stored there | Warning |
|---|---|---|
| Documents or Saved Games | Campaign saves, profiles and screenshots | OneDrive may redirect or synchronize the folder. |
| AppData Local/LocalLow | Unity saves, caches and device-specific settings | Cache files may be large but replaceable. |
| AppData Roaming | Profiles intended to follow a Windows account | Hidden by default. |
| Launcher userdata folder | Account-specific saves and cloud metadata | Numeric folders can represent different accounts. |
Handle cloud conflicts carefully
When a launcher asks whether to keep a local or cloud copy, stop and compare timestamps, file sizes and the last known progress. Copy both versions outside the synchronized folder before choosing. Cloud systems are synchronization tools, not versioned archival backups.
Make a restore note
Store a small text file beside the backup containing the original path, game version, launcher account and whether cloud sync was enabled. That note prevents a correct backup from becoming unusable months later.
Before moving to another PC
- Install and launch the game once so it creates the expected folders.
- Close the game and launcher fully.
- Copy the backed-up data into the documented location.
- Launch offline first when the platform allows it, then confirm progress before cloud synchronization.
- Keep the backup until several successful sessions have passed.
Frequently asked questions
Does copying the Steam or Epic game folder copy saves?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Many games store saves outside the installation directory.
Can I back up only one save file?
Only after confirming the game does not require a profile index, metadata file or companion database.
